Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Canary Island in the Atlantic. The islands are administrated by Spain. The coastline is 136 km long and the island is almost 100 km distant from Africa. It is an island of endless beaches and plenty of natural attractions. It is often called the Caribbean of Europe. Apart from children it is also beloved by sports enthusiasts because of its beaches which are perfect for water sports (surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding). Besides relaxation, it is also the local gastronomy what you will surely enjoy. The island is mostly known for its stable warm climate.
In general, there are 144 beaches on Fuerteventura with the overall length of 75 km (2/3 of them are covered with light sand which is a rarity on the Canary Islands). The most famous beaches are the Playa Morro Jable (a light sandy beach more than 4 km long), Playa del Matorral (a light sandy beach of approximately 3.8 km), Playa de Butihondo (golden yellow sandy beach 15 km long), Playa Esquinzo (a light-coloured sandy beach 3 km long), Playa de Sotavento (perhaps the most beautiful all-natural light sandy beach, more than 11 km long), Playas de Corralejo (a light sand sandy beach connected to sand dunes, 9 km long), Playas del Cotillo (light to white sandy beach almost 3 km long), or Playas de Esquina (a light sandy beach more than 2,5 km long).
Among the historical monuments of Fuerteventura, the following are worth a visit. Especially the town of Betancuria, which was the capital of the island until 1834. Its dominant sight is the 17th century Iglesia de Santa Maria church. Also beautiful is the nearby Franciscan monastery of Monasterio de San Buenaventura from the 15th century. Other spiritual monuments are for example the church of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in the town of La Oliva, or the Nuestra Senora de la Regla in Pájara. Because of the constant breeze, there are a lot of windmills on the island, the most common are in the areas of Antigua and Villaverde.
Goats, one of the few animals living on Fuerteventura, are a crucial part of the life on the island. Thanks to them, you can try some of the most famous and tasty goat cheese in the world!!! A gastronomic delicacy is the Majorero cheese, which is one of the three products protected by the Canary Islands' designation of origin. In many restaurants, especially in the inland, is served a variety of specialities with goat meat. Besides cheese, there is also salt produced on the island - in salt pans south of Caleta de Fuste in the Museo de la Sal. And we cannot forget the aloe. It is one of the few plants grown on the island. Cosmetics made from aloe give Fuerteventura as good a name as the aforementioned goat's cheese.
